God Commands Self Defense, Part 1

God Commands Self Defense, Part 1

Continuing in our study of God wanting us to defend ourself, let us start with some word searches in the Bible that would indicate Christians right of self defense. Now, though we will also use the Old Testament don’t say that this was not for Christians – it is for Christians. There is no division in the Bible as every word that proceeds from the mouth of God is for our instruction and learning.

There is one preacher who supports the use of self defense and tells us from the Bible where this is so, but he did a search on only ‘self defense’ or other related words. Thus, he did not find much support. There are other words that should be used that will give us a full understanding of God’s commandment to defend ourselves and family; they are:

  • weapons
  • sword
  • battle
  • fight
  • war
  • kill

to name a few.

If you have a bible software program you can do your own search. If you don’t have this software – which is OK – you can do it on the internet. Websites that have the Bible online, some of them you can do a search right on their site. For now, I’ll give you a small listing of where some of these words are in the Bible that support our right and our duty to defend ourselves.

Weapons:

Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; (Gen 27:3)

Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill. (Deu 1:41)

(Eze 32:27)

Sword:

found 384 verses

Now, if I print out all the verses that has the word ‘sword’ in it, there will be about 25 more pages. (I just did this and this is how I know.) This does not include the other search words above. Need I say that there is support for defending ourselves.

Now, some misguided Christians would say that God’s people were evil, and that the atheist would say Christians are war like. No, as many of these battles were fighting the heathens that were attacking the Israelites. There are also cases where the Israelites had to go on the attack.

Sure, there were case where we went into battle when we should not have. This just proves that no one is without sin – that includes: Christians, Jews, atheist and everyone else.

When you do your research, consider the context that it’s in. read the verses that are before it and after it. You will notice that many times there is recorded of God’s blessing for killing the Philistines, Amorites, Edomites or whomever. When our forefathers, the Israelites, were blessed by God, you know that God supported in what they had done.
